Sphinx Ruin
10 cm 2014
I don't know if this is a recognised genre within ceramics, but I occasionally come by a ruin that I am happy with. I will fire it as a one of a kind piece.
These ruins are what are left of the originals, after the casting process. I make 2 or 3-piece plaster moulds, which I pry apart. Usually the original is totally destroyed when I do this, but sometimes a surprising piece emerges. Losing a nose makes this one, based on the Big Brother poster of the 1950s 1984 film, resemble the Giza Sphinx. The plaster from the mould, clinging to the pupils, adds an uncanny glint to the imperious, pharaohnic glare.
